His mouth clearly does not match what he says., CONT: When the police are staking out Waingro's hotel room they use a camera on their hotel room door's peephole. After the fire alarm goes off, the door is opened and the display of the camera on the television in the room doesn't move in accordance to the movement of the door., CONT: In the coffee shop, the man sitting behind Vincent Hanna variously has a wine glass, a coffee mug and a beer bottle in different shots., CONT: The TV remote control placed on the table changes position during Vincent's conversation with Justine as he is watching the TV after returning from work., CONT: Once during the armored car holdup, the spike strip is visible in the background before it has been deployed., CONT: During the armored car heist the guys lay down a spike strip to blow out the tires of the police cars. When the truck stops after hitting the fence barrier, these holes are missing., CONT: Near the end, when Neil and Eady are driving the interstates of L.A., at one point they are approaching an interstate ramp curve to the left. Casals shoots out the hinges of the door to Benny's place with a shotgun. A shot from a 12-gauge from this close would result in collateral damage and dangerous ricochets resulting in injuries to Casals and Hanna. However, Det. Casals can be seen loading Hatton breaching rounds into the shotgun earlier in the scene. These cartridges are designed to shoot out locks and hinges, and to minimize the risk of ricochets etc. Additionally, the "shots" that "hit" the hinges explode outward, from the other side of the door, and are inconsistent with a shotgun shot at close range., CONT: When Vincent returns home before seeing his wife putting on makeup, Vincent looks at the dirty dishes in the sink, where we see a dirty plate in the left sink, and a wok with dirty dishes in it in the right sink. After Vincent comes back downstairs ("Okay, where are YOU goin'?), there are no dishes in the left sink and the dishes that were inside the wok in the right sink are gone., CONT: The shootout after the bank robbery: the weather changes between sunny and overcast between shots., CONT: When Vincent first gets out of the car at the bank robbery and shouts "Police! Move!" we see a couple coming towards him jump out of his way. In the next scene with Vincent, we see the same couple walking past him again., CONT: When Hanna goes to his hotel after leaving his "wife", he walks to the balcony to look out at the city lights. The camera angle changes to a view from behind his head so you can see the view, but the hair color and hair style of the man seen from behind is noticeably different - obviously a double.

It rains... you get wet., Vincent Hanna: What are you, a monk?::Neil McCauley: I have a woman.::Vincent Hanna: What do you tell her?::Neil McCauley: I tell her I'm a salesman.::Vincent Hanna: So then, if you spot me coming around that corner...you just gonna walk out on this woman? I know life is short, whatever time you get is luck. You want to walk? You walk right now. Or on your own... on your own you choose to come with me. And all I know is... all I know is there's no point in me going anywhere anymore if it's going to be alone... without you., Michael Cheritto: Well ya know, for me, the action is the juice., Vincent Hanna: I say what I mean, and I do what I say., Justine Hanna: I guess the earth shattered?::Vincent Hanna: So why didn't you let Bosko take you home?::Justine Hanna: I didn't wanna ruin their night too. Because I love you. I love you fat, bald, money, no money, driving a bus - I don't care. But you have got to be present like a normal guy, some of the time. That's sharing. This is not sharing, this is left overs.::Vincent Hanna: Oh, I see, what I should do is, er, come home and say "Hi honey! Guess what? I walked into this house today, where this junkie asshole just fried his baby in a microwave, because it was crying too loud. So let me share that with you. Come on, let's share that, and in sharing it, we'll somehow, er, cathartically dispel all that heinous shit". I walked into this house today, where this junkie asshole just fried his baby in a microwave, because it was crying to loud. So let me share that with you. Come on, let's share that, and in sharing it, we'll somehow, er, cathartically dispel all that heinous shit". Right?, Neil McCauley: Take off your shirt.::Doctor: What?::Neil McCauley: Take off your shirt.::Doctor: My - my God - my daughter gave it to me for Father's Day...::Neil McCauley: I don't give a shit who gave it to you, take it off!, Neil McCauley: Chris. Hey - Chris. Listen to me. Nate's gonna pick you up. He's gonna take you to his place.::Chris Shiherlis: Where's Charlene?::Neil McCauley: We gotta get outta here. We're all over the six o'clock news. We gotta get outta here.::Chris Shiherlis: I'm not going with...out her.::Neil McCauley: Think about that. I will meet you at Nate's.::Chris Shiherlis: Where're you going?::Neil McCauley: I gotta find out if our out got spilled along with every other damn thing.::Chris Shiherlis: Who did it?::Neil McCauley: Who wasn't there? Trejo. - I'll see you at Nate's., Hooker: Hey baby, time to go.::Waingro: Showed you a good time, didn't I?::Hooker: Oh yeah. You fly. You cool.::Waingro: You're lying to me. I can always tell when people lie to me.::Hooker: I ain't lying. You're a hot dog. A regular rodeo rider. And this was the monster fuck of my young life., Donald Breedan: Haven't got my break yet, man.::Solenko, Restaurant Manager: Cisco and Pancho didn't show. Haul out the garbage, mop up the back, take your break later.::Donald Breedan: [mutters under his breath] Piece of shit.::Donald Breedan: Pick up!, Lauren Gustafson: Mom, my barrettes are not on the couch!::Justine Hanna: Wear the blue ones!::Lauren Gustafson: I don't want to wear the blue ones. They don't match!::Justine Hanna: Did you check the bathroom?::Lauren Gustafson: I checked everywhere.::Justine Hanna: [looking at newspaper] What do you want me to do?::Lauren Gustafson: Find them!::Lauren Gustafson: [after 1 second of waiting for a response] Mom! Pay attention!::Justine Hanna: All right, sweetie. All right!::Lauren Gustafson: Daddy's going to be here! I can't be late!::Justine Hanna: You won't be late.::Lauren Gustafson: *I will be late!*, Vincent Hanna: [to Albert] Don't waste my motherfucking time!, Lillian: I met the manager. Is that the boss?::Breedan: I did time for what that motherfucker does every day!::Lillian: Baby - can you just handle it till we find you something new? Can you do that?::Breedan: Ain't a hard time been invented that I cannot handle... What you hangin' with me for, Lily?::Lillian: Because I'm proud of you.::Breedan: [snickers] You're proud of me? What the hell're you proud of me for?::Lillian: Come on home., [Robbing a bank]::Neil McCauley: We want to hurt no one. We're here for the bank's money, not your money. Your money is insured by the federal government, you're not gonna lose a dime. Think of your families, don't risk your life. Don't try and be a hero., Richard Torena: I get killed for telling you this shit.::Vincent Hanna: ...killed walking your doggie!, Vincent Hanna: You know, we are sitting here, you and I, like a couple of regular fellas. You do what you do, and I do what I gotta do. And now that we've been face to face, if I'm there and I gotta put you away, I won't like it. But I tell you, if it's between you and some poor bastard whose wife you're gonna turn into a widow, brother, you are going down.::Neil McCauley: There is a flip side to that coin. What if you do got me boxed in and I gotta put you down? Cause no matter what, you will not get in my way. We've been face to face, yeah. But I will not hesitate. Not for a second., Chris Shiherlis: When are you gonna get some furniture?::Neil McCauley: When I get around to it., Chris Shiherlis: When are you gonna get a lady?::Neil McCauley: When I get around to it., Sgt. Drucker: [to Albert] I paged your ass all day. I can't stand fuckin' pagin'., [first lines]::Construction Clerk: Check, charge, or cash?, Eady: You travel a lot?::Neil McCauley: Yeah.::Eady: Traveling makes you lonely?::Neil McCauley: I'm alone, I am not lonely., Vincent Hanna: It's like you said. All I am is what I'm going after., Justine Hanna: You prefer the normal routine. We fuck, then you lose the power of speech., Vincent Hanna: So you never wanted a regular type life?::Neil McCauley: What the fuck is that? Barbeques and ballgames?, Vincent Hanna: My life's a disaster zone. I got a stepdaughter so fucked up because her real father's this large-type asshole. I got a wife, we're passing each other on the down-slope of a marriage - my third - because I spend all my time chasing guys like you around the block. That's my life.::Neil McCauley: A guy told me one time, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." Now, if you're on me and you gotta move when I move, how do you expect to keep a... a marriage?, Charlene Shiherlis: What else are you selling?::Sgt. Drucker: All kinds of shit. But I don't have to sell this and you know it, 'cause this kind of shit here sells itself., Detective Casals: You recognize the MO?::Vincent Hanna: M.O.? Is that they're good... Once it escalated into a murder one beef for all of 'em after they killed the first two guards, they didn't hesitate. Pop guard number three because... what difference does it make? Why leave a living witness? Drop of a hat these guys will rock and roll..., Breedan: Ain't a hard time been invented that I cannot handle., Chris Shiherlis: For me the sun rises and sets with her, man., Justine Hanna: You don't live with me, you live among the remains of dead people. You sift through the detritus, you read the terrain, you search for signs of passing, for the scent of your prey, and then you hunt them down. That's the only thing you're committed to. The rest is the mess you leave as you pass through., Neil McCauley: L.A.P.D. Gee, what, where the fuck did this heat come from?::Chris Shiherlis: Maybe it's the score they were onto, the place, not us. 'Cause it's been hit a couple of times, you know, or something?::Neil McCauley: Assume they got our phones, assume they got our houses, assume they got us, right here, right now as we sit, everything. Assume it all., Chris Shiherlis: The bank is worth the risk. I need it, brother. We should stay and take it down., [from a deleted scene:]::Neil McCauley: And I am double the worst trouble you ever had., Vincent Hanna: I'm angry. I'm very angry, Ralph. You know, you can ball my wife if she wants you to. You can lounge around here on her sofa, in her ex-husband's dead-tech, post-modernistic bullshit house if you want to. But you do not get to watch my fucking television set!, Charlene Shiherlis: It's like risk versus reward, baby., Alan Marciano: Why'd I get mixed up with that bitch?::Vincent Hanna: Cause she's got a great ass... and you got your head all the way up it! Ferocious, aren't I? When I think of asses, a woman's ass, something comes out of me., Vincent Hanna: I gotta hold on to my angst. I preserve it because I need it. It keeps me sharp, on the edge, where I gotta be., [Over the phone]::Van Zant: What are you doing?::Neil McCauley: What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone.::Van Zant: I don't understand.::Neil McCauley: 'Cause there is a dead man on the other end of this fuckin' line, Justine Hanna: I may be stoned on grass and Prozac, but...you've been walking through our life dead. And now I have to demean myself with Ralph just to get closure with you., Neil McCauley: I do what I do best, I take scores. You do what you do best, try to stop guys like me., Michael Cheritto: What do you want to be when you grow up, honey?::Linda Cherrito: I don't know.::Michael Cheritto: She doesn't know. Just like me, I don't know either., Vincent Hanna: Who? Who? What are you, a fucking owl?, Justine Hanna: In a way, you're a party to this.::Vincent Hanna: Oh yeah, I made Ralph fuck you because it makes me feel good., Albert Torena: Where's your empathy, brother? It's a substance abuse problem.::Vincent Hanna: Empathy was yesterday. Today, you're wasting my motherfucking time., Vincent Hanna: When these guys walk out the door of whatever score they're gonna take next, they're gonna have the surprise of a lifetime., Richard Torena: There's this cat I was locked up with in Folsom: did a couple, two-three years. He got out, and I ran into him.::Vincent Hanna: [pauses, waiting for Richard to continue] And so?::Richard Torena: He's a big fiend for action. Now if he'd said nothin', I'd have thought nothin'. But he goes on and on running down to me about how he ain't been doing nothin' and nothin's been going on and all this other bullshit, so right then and there I know: this cat's got somethin' goin' down.::Vincent Hanna: [long pause] Pretty fuckin' great.::Vincent Hanna: [to Albert] Albert, what's wrong with you? You drag me here, waste my time like this.::Vincent Hanna: [to Richard] You saw a guy, on the street, who's an ex-con?::Richard Torena: That's right.::Vincent Hanna: Well I am... over-fuckin' whelmed. What d'you want for that, a junior g-man badge?, Waingro: Anyone want some pie?, Vincent Hanna: Are you Alan Marciano?::Alan Marciano: Yea. And who the fuck are you?, Bosko: I figure this guy went for that hold out piece, ankle holster right from here. Bang, bang, bang-bang-bang., Vincent Hanna: Seven years in Folsom. In the hole for three. McNeil before that. McNeil as tough as they say?::Neil McCauley: You lookin' to become a penologist?::Vincent Hanna: You lookin' to go back? You know, I chased down some crews; guys just lookin' to fuck up, get busted back. That you?::Neil McCauley: You must've worked some dipshit crews.::Vincent Hanna: I worked all kinds.::Neil McCauley: You see me doin' thrill-seeker liquor store holdups with a "Born to Lose" tattoo on my chest?::Vincent Hanna: No, I do not.::Neil McCauley: Right. I am never goin' back.::Vincent Hanna: Then don't take down scores., [last lines]::Neil McCauley: Told you I'm never going back.::Vincent Hanna: Yeah., Vincent Hanna: I got an idea...of what they're looking at.::Vincent Hanna: You wanna know what they're looking at?::Vincent Hanna: I mean - is this guy something, or is he something?::Vincent Hanna: This crew is good!::Vincent Hanna: You know what they're looking at?::Dr. Bob: What?::Vincent Hanna: Us. The L-A-P-D. Po-lice Department... We just got made., Van Zant: Who are you?::Waingro: Waingro. My name's Waingro.::Van Zant: I've been living in the office day and night, how well do you know him?::Waingro: Oh, we took some major scores together.::Van Zant: [nods slowly] How come I haven't heard from him?::Waingro: Well, he's probably busy right now. But he's real thorough. He ain't gon' forget about you.::Van Zant: Oh that's reassuring.::Waingro: [chuckles], Neil McCauley: Gimme the key!::Bank Guy: What key?::[Neil socks bank guy in the face, who tumbles backwards, and extracts the necessary key; the bank guy struggles in pain]::Neil McCauley: Don't move! Sit there. Sit there! Let it bleed., Neil McCauley: [has gun on a severely injured Waingro]::Neil McCauley: Look at me. *Look at me!*::Waingro: [doesn't want to and whimpers]::Neil McCauley: Look at me!::Waingro: [slowly pathetically looks upward]::Neil McCauley: [fires two shots into Waingro's chest]::Waingro: [makes some wild horrible gasping sound]::Neil McCauley: [aims upward and fires a third shot, this one into Waingro's head], Waingro: [hits security guard] Get back! Get back!::Michael Cheritto: Hey, Slick, you see that shit coming outta their ears? They can't fucking hear you. Now cool it!::Waingro: [to security guard] You had to fuck with me. You wanna fuck with me?::[shoots the security guard in the head], Richard Torena: I'm a good citizen.::Vincent Hanna: I'm Donald Duck!, Vincent Hanna: You know what? Neil is gone. Bam! Flying like a bird.::Detective Casals: Vincent, how do you? We still got bait. Maybe some time.::Vincent Hanna: Got. Got. What've we got? *What've we got?* Bon voyage, motherfucker. You were good. I'm going to the hotel. Gonna take a shower. Gonna sleep, for a month., Neil McCauley: Our problem is take the bank or split right now, do not go home, do not pack, nothing. 30 secs flat from now we are gone on our separate ways, that's it..., Vincent Hanna: That's exactly what they're gonna do, they're gonna walk. This is my operation, I have tactical command that supercedes your rank, they will walk away and you will let them..., Nate: What happened out there?::Neil McCauley: Don't ask..., Uniformed Officer: You taking this one? Or does it stay in Division?::Vincent Hanna: Does this look like gangbangers working the local 7-11 to you? Robbery-Homicide's taking it., Chris Shiherlis: Charlene's gonna leave me.::Neil McCauley: Why?::Chris Shiherlis: No more steaks in the freezer., [Neil asks Donald to fill in for Trejo]::Donald Breedan: Yeah man. Fuck it. You on., Vincent Hanna: Gimme all you got!, Neil McCauley: [about dreams] I have one where I'm drowning. And I gotta wake myself up and start breathing or I'll die in my sleep.::Vincent Hanna: You know what that's about?::Neil McCauley: Yeah. Having enough time.::Vincent Hanna: Enough time? To do what you wanna do?::Neil McCauley: That's right.::Vincent Hanna: You doin' it now?::Neil McCauley: No, not yet., Nate: So, so long, brother. You take it easy. You're home free., Vincent Hanna: [singing] By the time I get to Phoenix, we'll be rising. He'll probably leave a note right on the door., Waingro: [in diner] Anyone want some pie?::[no response, Chris sees something out the window]::Trejo: I gotta go use the john. [gets up and Cheritto goes to sit where Trejo was at the end of the table]::Neil McCauley: [enters the diner. Trejo returns, Cheritto gets up, Trejo takes his place as Cheritto sits down next to Chris. Neil sits down next to Waingro, waiting for an explanation]::Waingro: I had to get it on. He was making a move. *I had to get it on.*::Neil McCauley: [takes Waingro by the head and smashes his face in the table. A country western trucker like guy with glasses a couple tables over looks over at the commotion]::Michael Cheritto: [shoots the guy a look and the guy returns to looking at his paper]::Neil McCauley: [grabs Waingro by the hair but lets go. Waingro groans/sighs in disgust] Split's in the car. Took it out of ours, evenly. To make up for his full end. Because I want to pay off and get rid of this motherfucker right now.::[Everyone gets up, Waingro angrily grabbing his jacket. Cherrito makes sure Waingro is ahead of him and everyone walks out of the diner]::Neil McCauley: [after walking past two pillars spins around and punches Waingro in the stomach. He grabs Waingro by the nose and drags him between a lot of cars]::Trejo: [opens up a car trunk lined with garbage bags]::Neil McCauley: [forces Waingro to the ground, kicks him, holds him down, and draws his pistol out]::Michael Cheritto: HOLD IT!::Neil McCauley: [looks up to see a police car coming down the street. He hides his gun and walks up a bit to see where the cop car is headed. It suddenly turns around and goes back down the highway]::Neil McCauley: [turns back to see that Waingro is gone], Neil McCauley: Don't move. Don't fuckin' move. Put your hands in the air. Put your hands in the air. Put 'em up.

In a promotional interview contained by back-up of _The Keep (1983)_ (qv), superintendent 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) stated that he required to see "Heat" bring to the blind (it be already written) but grasp no pizzazz in direct it., Filmed in 65 locations around Los Angeles, without a single soundstage., The scene where Vincent catches his wife cheating, removes the television set and later throws it from his car was lifted from a similar scene with 'Dennis Farina' (qv) in _"Crime Story" (1986)_ (qv), also produced by 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv)., 'Xander Berkeley' (qv) plays Ralph, a minor character. He also appeared in _L.A. Takedown (1989) (TV)_ (qv), of which this film is a remake., 'Val Kilmer' (qv) is playing a part originally played by 'Peter Dobson (I)' (qv) in _L.A. Takedown (1989) (TV)_ (qv). Dobson also played 'Elvis Presley' (qv) in _Forrest Gump (1994)_ (qv), a role played by Kilmer in _True Romance (1993)_ (qv)., Composer 'Elliot Goldenthal' (qv) wrote a piece of score to play over the final scene. 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) replaced it with Moby's "God Moving Over the Face of the Water", so Goldenthal re-used the piece as the end titles for _Michael Collins (1996)_ (qv) the following year, replacing the electric guitar with a fiddle to give it a more Irish sound. The original cue, called "Hand In Hand," can be heard at Goldenthal's website., SPOILER: McCauley's 30 second rule in action: When McCauley comes out of the hotel to drive off with Eady, it takes 42 seconds from the time he first sees Lt. Hanna to when he turns and runs. It takes McCauley 12 seconds to assess the situation (sees Lt. Hanna to when he starts to back away from Eady) and then 30 seconds to actually leave Eady behind., In the UK, the film was given a '15' rating for both its cinema and video release and passed uncut in both instances. It was re-released in 2000 with a new 'Underground Epics' video cover, bearing an '18' certificate. However, this was not a different version of the film - the content was the same as the '15' version. The '18' certificate was a mistake, and the video cover was withdrawn., The drive-in sequence was shot at the Centinela Drive-in in Inglewood, which had been closed since 1993. The theater was demolished in 1998, and the site is now occupied by an apartment complex., The cast who took part in the infamous robbery sequence had to undergo power weapons training., Lt. Hanna is shown "checking chamber" on his handgun in at least one scene. This is a trademark of the character Nick Stone in a series of novels by 'Andy McNab' (qv), who was technical weapons training adviser on _Heat_ . Although not an uncommon thing to do with a handgun, it is rarely given such visual prominence in films. Also, the crew's tactics in the bank robbery shootout are notably similar to the "response to enemy fire" tactics featured in the book and film of McNab's _Bravo Two Zero (1999) (TV)_ (qv)., In a deleted scene, Nate tells Neil that he and Chris will be set up with new lives in Ireland., In the trailer, McCauley tells the shade tree doctor "I'm double the worst trouble you've ever seen." A deleted scene explains this: the doctor had approached Neil and wanted $30,000 instead of the usual $15,000, saying Neil and Chris were wanted criminals and a high risk factor. Neil then explains to the doctor that if Chris died from his injuries, he would hunt down the doctor and kill him., SPOILER: The current residents of the apartment where Trejo's death scene were filmed got curious after seeing the film and pulled up the carpet in the room Trejo was shot. To their surprise, they saw that residue of the theatrical blood still remained., SPOILER: Cameo:('Mick Gould' (qv)): technical advisor, Gould is shown nodding his head at Hanna and Casalas in the hallway before capturing Hugh Benny., 'Jon Voight' (qv) initially turned down the part of Nate, telling 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) that there were several actors who could perform the part better. Mann told Voight that he wanted him for the role since he'd always wanted to work with him., The cast was given weapons and tactics training by former British Special Air Service Sergeant 'Andy McNab' (qv)., The first film to ever feature both 'Robert De Niro' (qv) and 'Al Pacino' (qv) acting together, which created much hype prior to release. They both starred in _The Godfather: Part II (1974)_ (qv) but never shared the screen together as split chronology prevented this. When this movie was finally released, even its advertising material promoted the film as a De Niro/Pacino "showdown.", SPOILER: The only thief to not get away from the bank heist is carrying a different model rifle than the others., 'Keanu Reeves' (qv) was originally signed to play Chris Shiherlis, and 'Carsten Norgaard' (qv) was also one of the director's options, but they both lost the part when 'Val Kilmer' (qv) was able squeeze it into his schedule while making _Batman Forever (1995)_ (qv)., Vincent's sidearm is a Colt Officer's Model in .45 caliber with ivory grips. Neil carries an HK USP chambered in .45acp early on in the movie, and then switches to a SIG Sauer P220 in the same caliber later on., When Nate tells Neil about his new "out", he describes it as an airplane bearing the registration number N1011S. According to the FAA registry database, the registration was taken in 2000, five years after the movie was released, and is now a 1964 Cessna 310, a two-engine light propeller-driven airplane., 'Val Kilmer' (qv) filmed some of his sequences concurrently with _Batman Forever (1995)_ (qv)., When 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) filmed the restaurant scene at Kate Mantilini in Beverly Hills, he used the restaurant's actual employees as extras. Upon the last day of filming, he awarded them all with a SAG card. Today you can still sit in the table where DeNiro and Pacino sat, and the two are both regulars at the popular restaurant., The manager of the Kate Mantilini restaurant in Beverly Hills said in the Heat special edition that even though the restaurant doesn't technically take reservations, people often call to try to reserve the table that DeNiro and Pacino sat at in the movie., The scene involving the shootout after the bank robbery was particularly tricky to film since they were only allowed to film on the weekends., In June of 2002, the scene involving the shootout after the bank robbery was shown to United States Marine recruits at MCRD San Diego as an example of the proper way to retreat while under fire., Much of the film is based off a real-life confrontation between Chicago cop 'Chuck Adamson' (qv) and the REAL 'Neil McCauley (I)' (qv). Adamson was a retired police officer whom director 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) had been working with off and on since the film _Thief (1981)_ (qv) starring 'James Caan (I)' (qv) (and based upon the career of famed Chicago burglar 'Frank Hohimer' (qv) whom Adamson had arrested). They had later worked together on two shows produced by Mann, "Miami Vice" and "Crime Story". According to Chuck Adamson (and confirmed by Michael Mann) in the Heat-Special Edition DVD Documentary "Crime Stories", McCauley was a professional robber whom he had frequently crossed paths with. Events such as the scene between Vincent Hanna and Neil McCauley in the coffee shop where they basically tell each other that the last time they meet will be their last, and the warehouse sting where McCauley got tipped off that the cops were around due to an officer making a noise really happened. In real life, the real Neil McCauley was killed during a robbery of a grocery store (similar to the bank heist shootout) by Adamson's team who were tipped off to the robbery., Bosco, at the party, tells a story of a grade school friend of his name Raoul. 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) said that the story was completely ad-libbed by 'Ted Levine' (qv) and that he had no idea how Levine came up with it., 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) visited inmates in Folsom prison to gain some insight into prison life to aid his depiction of Neil. Mann later commented that Neil's collars were always perfectly starched, as they would have been in prison., Many viewers claim that 'Robert De Niro' (qv) and 'Al Pacino' (qv) never (or hardly ever) actually share screen time during the film, despite the hype surrounding the films release as showcasing their first screen appearance. In most Pan and Scan versions of the film, and TV broadcasts, it does appear that during the "diner scene" the two never actually share the screen, but viewing the film in correct letterbox format, as the director intended, clearly shows the two actors sitting at the table, though only in wide shots., The meeting between 'Robert De Niro' (qv) and 'Al Pacino' (qv) over coffee was shot at Kate Mantilini on Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills. The L.A. mainstay is a noted top spot for a stylish late supper. The restaurant now has "heat" spelled in neon above the door and a large poster of the actors in the now famous scene. Diners may request the very table featured in the scene, table #71, which wait staff are familiar with as "The Table", and are happy to seat De Niro Pacino fans at their famous meeting place., In an interview with 'Al Pacino' (qv) on the DVD Special Edition, Pacino revealed that for the scene in the restaurant between Hannah and McNeil, 'Robert De Niro' (qv) felt that the scene should not be rehearsed so that the unfamiliarity between the two characters would seem more genuine. 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) agreed, and shot the scene with no practice rehearsals., 'Mykelti Williamson' (qv), in the Special DVD Edition of the movie, said in an interview that director 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) arranged for cast members to meet with real life LAPD Detectives and professional criminals at an exclusive restaurant (the name of which Williamson refused to disclose) where LAPD detectives and criminals socialized. Cast members playing the detectives had dinner with the LAPD detectives and their wives one night, while the cast members playing the thieves had dinner with the real life criminals and their wives on a separate night. Williamson said that Mann arranged these events so the actors would have a better idea of how real detectives and criminals socialized and interacted with each other., The line 'Al Pacino' (qv) uses: "Who? Who? What are you, a fuckin' owl?" is the same line the murderer says to Pacino when holding a gun to his head at the climax _Sea of Love (1989)_ (qv)., In one scene 'Al Pacino' (qv) uses the line "Open Sesame". He uses the same line in the movie _Donnie Brasco (1997)_ (qv)., The character of Nate, played by 'Jon Voight' (qv), is based on real-life former career criminal 'Edward Bunker' (qv)., SMITHEE('Michael Mann (I)' (qv)): disowned the TV version aired by NBC. Mann offered to restore seventeen of the cut minutes, NBC decided to instead cut 40 minutes of the film out in order to fit a 3-hour TV time-slot -- Mann said, "You can call it a Michael Smithee or an Alan Mann movie.", 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) made the movie as tribute to a detective friend of his in Chicago who obsessively tracked and killed a thief (named Neil McCauley) he had once met under non-violent circumstances., 'Kevin Gage' (qv)'s Waingro character is based on a real Chicago criminal named Waingro who ratted out some influential Chicago criminals. According to 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv), Waingro went missing; his body was found in northern Mexico, where it had been nailed to the wall of a shed., Body count: 21, 'Amy Brenneman (I)' (qv) disliked the script and didn't want to be in the movie, saying it was too filled with blood with no morality. 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) told her that with that mind-set she would be perfect for the role of Eady., 'Al Pacino' (qv) and 'Robert De Niro' (qv) were 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv)'s first choices for Hanna and McCauley., 'Dennis Farina' (qv), a former Chicago police officer, was a consultant on the film since the story was based on a Chicago police officer and criminal. Farina had previously played a Chicago cop in Mann's television series _"Crime Story" (1986)_ (qv)., SPOILER: Moby's two contributions to the soundtrack were originally meant to be reversed, his cover of Joy Division's "New Dawn Fades" was supposed to play over the closing credits and "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" while Hanna pursues McCauley on the freeway. However, director Michael Mann felt "God Moving.." was such a cathartic piece of music, it was more suited to strike up during McCauley's death scene, ending the movie., SPOILER: An ending discussed featured Neil and Vince shooting and killing each other instead of Vince shooting Neil. Mann didn't like the idea and therefore was not shot., The concierge at the airport hotel is played by 'Tom Elfmont' (qv), a former L.A.P.D. detective who served as one of the film's technical advisers., The scene of McCauley standing against a window and watching the ocean was inspired by the painting "Pacific" by Alex Colville., 'Michael Madsen (I)' (qv) was originally casted as Michael Cheritto, but was ultimately replaced (for unknown reasons) by 'Tom Sizemore' (qv)., In the fire fight scene after the bank robbery, Chris crouches at the rear of a car in order to change a magazine. The registration plate of this car reads '2LUP382' 'LUP' in British Army terminology is 'Lying Up Position'. 2LUP would reflect that this was the second Lying Up Position for Chris - his first being behind a green car., In the director commentary, 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) noted that 'Al Pacino' (qv) ad-libbed the line "Because she's got a... GREAT ASS!" and 'Hank Azaria' (qv)'s look of exasperated shock was totally genuine., In an early draft of the script, Vincent Hanna had a cocaine habit, which, according to 'Al Pacino' (qv), explains his bombastic outbursts., In the director's commentary, 'Michael Mann (I)' (qv) said that Neil's trademark gray suits were designed to help him blend into a crowd and not draw attention to himself., 'Jean-Claude Van Damme' (qv) was briefly considered for the role of Michael Cheritto., 'Don Johnson (I)' (qv) was briefly considered for the part of Michael Cheritto. He was also discussed as a possible back-up for both De Niro and Pacino, if one of them turned down their parts., The rifle used by Lt. Vincent Hanna ('Al Pacino' (qv)) in the bank hold-up shoot-out is a Fabrique Nationale FNC in 5.56mm (.223 Remington)., The rifle used by Chris Shiherlis ('Val Kilmer' (qv)) in the deserted drive-in movie shoot-out is a Heckler & Koch 91 in 7.62mm (.308 Winchester)., SPOILER: The only criminal that survives the film is the one who wears a different-colored hockey mask in the opening robbery sequence., DIRTRADE('Michael Mann (I)' (qv)): [repeated line]: The phrase 'Time is Luck' is used by McCauley when talking to Eady about their relationship and having time for them. It is also used in _Miami Vice (2006)_ (qv), when Isabella is talking to Sonny about their relationship., Neil Mccauley ('Robert De Niro' (qv))only smiles four times in the entire movie: once, when he sees Donald Breedan ('Dennis Haysbert' (qv)) in the diners' kitchen while working as a short order cook, once when he first meets Eady in the restaurant, at dinner with his "crew" and their respective ladies, and finally (briefly) as he is driving in the car with Eady on their way to the airport., One of the only scenes in the movie in which Neil Mccauley ('Robert De Niro' (qv)) smiles is when he sees Donald Breedan ('Dennis Haysbert' (qv)) in the diners' kitchen while working as a short order cook. He also smiles when Nate ('Jon Voight' (qv)) tells him in the car that Vincent Hanna ('Al Pacino' (qv)) thinks he's "sharp." He might also be smiling as he watches Hanna's antics as he photographs them in the container yard, and again as he walks towards the car to Eady after wasting Waingro ('Kevin Gage' (qv))., 'Nick Nolte' (qv) and 'Jeff Bridges (I)' (qv) were discussed as a possible alternative for the two leading roles., 'Kris Kristofferson (I)' (qv), in what would have been an obvious nod to _Thief (1981)_ (qv) and Willie Nelson's character in that movie, was suggested for the role of 'Nate', played by 'Jon Voight' (qv).
